Hoisting Beams in Amsterdam
Yes I was in Amsterdam and no, im not going to talk about smoking pot or the red light district,
I am going to talk about something truly amazing, the fucking hoisting Beams they instal in all the buildings,
I mean how isn’t it installed in every house and building in the world?!?
Architects of the world, please make this happen, for everyones benefit, I truly think this.
I can’t even count the times i have almost killed myself or broke my back carrying stuff up the stairs
Before going to Amsterdam, I only associated this with old port warehouses and farm barns,
But in Amsterdam they are not only in the old canal houses put all over the city.
I have read articles about this genius life hack and long story short, all started in the fifteenth century.
The smaller the width of the frontage, the lower taxes had to be paid, so the building were thin and ground level,
but in the seventeenth century, the city became more prosperous and grow, people began to built up,
and because the original buildings were so small,
It was impossible to get stuff up to the new floors, the stairs were too tight, hence the idea of the beams on the out side.
Pure adaptation. We can all learn from this. When I say we a mean all the architects of the world.
PS. Loved shooting the city.
